We recently received this e-mail:
Dear Hothead,
I just wanted to write to let you know - give you the heads up - that all of my preparations are now in order, and that you now have my personal expressed permission to release the first episode of ‘On the Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness’ to the unwashed masses (or, more specifically, to me).
Fridge and cupboards alike are now brimming with caffeine and/or sugar based sustenance, the wife has been unceremoniously shipped off to stay with the in-laws, and an appropriately virulent (albeit imagined) ailment has been selected to serve as a cover - adequately horrifying my co-workers and buying myself sufficient “sick” time to get through the first episode.
It was very kind of you all to wait for me, and it is much appreciated.
Hugs & kisses,
Colin
We know lots of you are anxious for the release of the game, and we are too. We’re happy to report that we just went gold on the Windows, Mac and Linux builds of Episode One, and are finalizing release plans with the folks over at Microsoft for the Xbox version. So it will be in your hands, on the platform of your choice, very soon.
Stay tuned for a release date as soon as we have it….

All I can say is congratulations. Let her roll in, I can’t wait.

“Soon”?
If it’s gone gold, why can’t I pay and download it RIGHT NOW?
If I can’t download it, it’s not “gold”.
And please don’t tell me you’re withholding it to prop up the unworkable inefficient business model of retailers.

They’re probably holding it back for the XBL version; I assume MS does some sort of rudimentary QA/testing with Xbox Live software before putting it up for download.
“Gold” for a download game should be “released to the server guys, should be available later today, get your credit cards ready”. Now, if you’re having issues with the download service or whatever, fine, but it’s been a week and we’re impatient.

I wrote something about this in the PA forums. Essentially, there is still a lot of logistical work that needs to be completed. Sucks, because we want you to be able to play it as soon as possible as well but we want to make sure everything is ready. More will be explained next Tuesday.
