I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Eric Webb, the Creative Director at Hothead Games, a Vancouver-based indie game development studio. During our conversation, Eric shared with me his passion for gaming, his journey into the industry, and his day-to-day as a Creative Director.
Eric's first memory with games goes back to the arcade machines in a small convenience store across the street from his childhood home. It was there where he discovered his love for games like Pole Position, Spy Hunter, and Mat Mania. Little did he know at the time, this love for gaming would eventually lead him to his dream job.
Eric's journey into the games industry started with a newspaper article about a .99$ app that made a million dollars overnight during the early days of the first iPhone. This sparked his fascination with the potential of the gaming market and led him to his first job in QA at a local mobile studio. Fast forward a decade later, and he is now the Creative Director at Hothead Games, overseeing the creative and business direction of their projects.
As a Creative Director, Eric's day-to-day involves communicating with different teams and individuals, reviewing builds, and providing guidance and intention to the projects they are working on. While time management and being mentally and creatively agile across multiple projects can be challenging, Eric thrives on the excitement that comes with every new day.
When asked about his dream project, Eric shared his love for toys and his desire to create a game that could be turned into a toy line. As for advice for those looking to get into a role like his in gaming, Eric suggests being generous with your time and attention, being eager, and always seeking to learn from your peers.
